HISTORY OF IERNE
The Ierne Social & Sports Club , now based here on Gracepark Road, Drumcondra was originally formed in 1911 as the C. B. P.P. U. ( Christian Brothers Past Pupils Union ) It was based for many years at 12 Parnell Sq East, close to the main entrance into The Garden of Remembrance.
The Ierne Hall in Parnell Sq was known to most Dubliners for Whist Drives and indeed later for dances particularly in the showband era. The club activities were held in the hall and the other rooms on the ground and upper floors, and included at different stages a strong and active debating society, a musical and dramatic society, snooker & billiards ,bridge , chess, fencing and badminton.
The members were also engaging and organised in outdoor activities from an early stage such as football and swimming and to meet this growing demand from the members, the sports ground of over 4 acres and just a few minutes drive from the city centre was purchased in 1930 with the entrance then off Waterfall Ave ( close to the 10 th green ).
Over the years the grounds catered for football , cricket, hockey , tennis and a putting section. Indoors table tennis and social activity prospered. As the hockey and then cricket declined, it was decided to expand the putting green into a full Pitch & Putt course in `1953 . The Pitch & Putt section became so strong and active that within 10 years they were granted the use of the football area on a year round basis. In those initial 10 years, the Pitch & Putt would reduce to 9 holes for the winter football season.
Eventually we sold Parnell Sq in 1979 and moved all activities to the Sports Ground. Our current Clubhouse was opened in 1985. We subsequently acquired more land and as well as commencing Bowling sections , both indoor and outdoor , we moved our entrance to its current location off Gracepark rd.
The Pitch & Putt section is by far the strongest and most active in the club to day followed by the outdoor Bowling section . Tennis , snooker , indoor bowls and the Gym make up the balance of our present facilities.
Clubs like Ierne donít just happen. Ierne is the result of the members efforts over the years. We celebrated our centenary in 2011 and look to the future.
We wish to compile a History of the Club and would be delighted to hear from any member or relative of a previous or deceased member who has memories , stories , photographs , or documents regarding the Club at either Parnell Sq or Richmond Rd . Have you any papers , agendas , reports or leaflets on any of our sporting sections or social events . If you are ever clearing out your attic and find any Club memorabilia , we would be delighted to meet you. It could greatly help us to put the pieces of our past together.
We have some old photographs and would be delighted to get some more. Can you help us to identify any of the faces .
